Dr. Ekasit Intaranonwilai, our cardiologist at Bangkok Hua Hin Heart Center, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin shares that coronary artery diseases which is caused by narrowing of the blood vessels to the heart muscles and the risks of having the diseases increase with age with more occurrence in men than women in general, however the risks become equal for post-menopausal women and men. The risks are also more among family members of patients with coronary heart diseases so the presence of one patient with coronary or ischemic heart diseases should alarm the family members to seek a medical advice. The investigation for blood sugar, cholesterol levels and blood pressure along with smoking habits, exercises and weight control and diets also pay big roles in controlling risks for coronary or ischemic heart disease. Here are some tips on diet. It is recommended to eat more fish if you wish to lower the risks of coronary heart diseases. The fish is the good source of protein and other nutrients including omega 3 which helps lower the risks for coronary and cerebrovascular diseases. An occasional switching between lean meat, egg whites and plant-based protein such as soy and tofu is also recommended. The consumption of animal-based protein may increase the fat intake so choosing fat-free products of milk or egg whites. The regular consumption of vegetables, fruit, nuts and whole grains is also good for preventing coronary heart diseases. Taking right fats is also important and avoid saturated fats such as palm oil, coconut oil, coconut cream along with animal fats, butter, cream, margarine, mayonnaise deep-fried food, snacks including pies, cakes, cookies and croissant and etc. When cooking, use unsaturated fats or oils for cooking such as oils from rice brans, sunflower seeds, soy beans, corns and olives. Additionally, controlled blood sugar level also helps control the metabolisms of cholesterol and body weights. Sufficient hydration at least 1-2 litres per day is also important to make you feel fresh and control volume of food intake. In addition to food consumption, there are two other things that are good for your heart health; one is regular exercise which helps stimulate the endorphin release causing a good mood and happiness. This chemical also helps to increase energy for your body and helps with the cardiac output. Another one is stress management by laughing, because laughing stimulates the heart to pump blood around your body and when the heart works better, it also prevents of heart diseases and dizziness. Find time to relax with your family as nowadays, people work too hard and forget to pay attention to your body and your heart health.
