Water Vapor Therapy: Treatment for Benign Prostate Enlargement
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate enlargement often begins around age 40 and becomes more common with age. It can cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or incomplete bladder emptying. Frequent nighttime urination may also disrupt sleep, affecting quality of life. If untreated, the condition can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections. In severe cases, significant obstruction can result in bladder dysfunction or kidney damage over time.
Dr. Karan Rimthephathip, our urologist at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shares that the treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) depends on individual symptoms. Doctors may recommend options ranging from lifestyle changes and medication to surgery, such as transurethral resection of the prostate using electric or laser techniques.
A new and effective approach to treating BPH is Water Vapor Therapy, which uses thermal energy from steam to shrink excess prostate tissue, improving the urinary pathway and relieving obstruction symptoms.
The advantages of Water Vapor Therapy make it ideal for patients who experience medication side effects or ineffective treatment. It also reduces surgical risks and complications, making it a safer alternative for elderly patients or those with underlying health conditions. Since it is minimally invasive, involving little to no incision, recovery is faster, allowing patients to return to their daily activities quickly. It has minimal impact on sexual health, such as erectile function or ejaculation. Additionally, water vapor therapy delivers long-lasting results, with most patients requiring only one treatment and follow-up evaluations every 2 to 5 years.
How does Water Vapor Therapy for BPH work?
During water vapor therapy, doctors insert a special instrument through the urethra to reach the prostate, using a minimally invasive device. Steam at a temperature of 103°C is then injected into the prostate 4 to 6 times, depending on its size. The steam destroys the prostate cells compressing the urethra, widening the passage. The procedure takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Patients may feel slight discomfort during the treatment, but it can be done without the need for general anesthesia.
However, water vapor therapy for BPH may cause mild, short-term side effects such as difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, frequent urination, reduced semen volume, and urinary tract infections. These symptoms typically resolve within 2 to 4 weeks.
Dr. Karan also shares that, “Water vapor therapy is a safe and effective treatment that offers quick recovery. If you or someone close to you is experiencing this condition, it’s important to consult a specialist to assess and plan the most suitable treatment for each individual’s symptoms, helping you regain confidence and improve your quality of life.”
